Kurios – Cabinet of Curiousities

Posted: June 9, 2019 by lambentI2e in Events / Gatherings

Date : 5 Jul – 4 Aug 2019
Venue : Big Top on Bayfront Avenue, beside Marina Bay Sands, Singapore
Tickets : Available here

Cirque Du Soleil is back in Singapore with KURIOS, premiering under a brand-new white-and-grey Big Top next to Marina Bay Sands. Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities is a tale in which time comes to a complete stop, transporting the audience inside a fantasy world where everything is possible. In this realm set in the latter half of the nineteenth century, reality is quite relative indeed as our perception of it is utterly transformed.

Since its debut, critics across North America and Japan have been raving about KURIOS – Cabinet of Curiosities. In an alternate yet familiar past, in a place where wonders abound for those who trust their imagination, a scientist (“The Seeker”) is convinced that there exists a hidden world – a place where the craziest ideas and the grandest dreams await. Out of his curio cabinet steps an international cast of 47 artists from 17 countries, a collection of otherworldly characters made up of world-class gymnasts, acrobats, contortionists, hand-puppeteers, yo-yo wizards, clowns, actors and musicians. Together they turn the Seeker’s steampunk world upside-down as they are guided by an energetic gypsy jazz, electro swing soundtrack.

Fun Kurios Facts about Kurios …

  • To make the Accordion Man’s attire, the costume-maker spent an entire week sewing inside the costume
  • Rima Hadchiti, who plays Mini Lili, is 3.3 feet tall and weighs 41 pounds, and is one of the smallest people in the world
  • The mechanical hand weighs 750 pounds and measures 15 feet by 6.8 feet
  • More than a hundred costumes were created for the cast of KURIOS
  • There are 426 props in the show, the most of any production in Cirque du Soleil’s history
  • The 122 tour members come from 23 different countries, some have been touring with Cirque du Soleil for over 15 years
  • This is the first time that Cirque du Soleil presents a welcoming act on top of the actual big top before the show starts. Weather permiting, 3 artists will climb up the big top and greet the guests from above while playing music and acting. Guests will get a taste of the KURIOS experience as soon as they enter the site.
  • The team of props makers spent about 250 man-hours building Mr. Microcosmos’ round belly
  • All performers apply their own make-up before every show, which can take up to two hours

Flipside Scratch Night

Posted: May 14, 2019 by lambentI2e in Events / Gatherings

Date : 24, 31 May 2019
Time : 945pm – 11pm
Venue : Esplanade Annexe Studio, Esplanade, Singapore

For the first time at Flipside, practising and aspiring artists are invited to present short performances of 5–15 minutes in a light-hearted night of exploration and discovery. The scratch night will have a special focus on music and comedy with a twist, puppetry, physical/visual theatre and contemporary circus. This new festival platform is an opportunity for artists to test new material and ideas on a small, friendly audience, promising to be a fun night out for those who enjoy surprises and the good ol’ open mic format. Promising participants might just be offered the opportunity to have their acts developed and featured in the next edition of Scratch Night!

Flipside Scratch Night will be hosted by improv comedy troupe, The Latecomers, and feature two short works-in-progress.

If you have been working on an idea for a performance (5 to 15 minutes’ worth of new material)
– that brings together storytelling, music and comedy, or
– incorporates some form of puppetry, physical or visual theatre, theatrical illusion or contemporary circus

Successful applicants will be informed by 20 May 2019, Mon (for Flipside Scratch Night on 24 May 2019, Fri) and by 27 May 2019, Mon (for Flipside Scratch Night on 31 May 2019, Fri).

Expect a no frills, open mic style event. When it’s your turn, you have three minutes to set up your equipment or props and you’re on! You should have just enough material for a 5–15-minute performance. A buzzer will go off at the 15-minute mark (if you are still performing), signalling the end of your slot, and you will have to wrap up your piece within 10 seconds.
